Karastan Wool: The Right Choice for You?

The truth is, not all wool carpets and rugs are created equal. As wonderful as wool is, it is just the beginning of the carpet-making process. The difference lies in the manufacturing. Most companies use commissioned spinners, dyers and even tufters to help create their products. Not Karastan. Karastan is the only company in the US to control every step of the manufacturing process, so you can feel confident in your flooring purchase.

Karastan chooses to use New Zealand wool over other wool types because it offers superior advantages. It is the purest, whitest wool in the world, offering excellent dyeing characteristics that create long-lasting colors. It is raised with little impact on the natural landscape. It is a renewable and biodegradable fiber that is one of the world’s most environmentally friendly products. New Zealand wool is produced on land mostly unsuitable for other agricultural purposes and does not compete with food production. No internationally banned pesticides are used on New Zealand farms, making New Zealand’s sheep industry one of the world’s greenest animal production systems.

In addition to New Zealand wool being the highest quality with minimal impact on the environment, it is also friendly to you. There is no reason why asthmatic and allergy sensitive people cannot enjoy the comfort and beauty of Karastan wool carpets and rugs. Wool fibers are too long and too coarse to be inhaled and therefore do not affect asthma sufferers. It is a non-allergenic fiber and does not promote the growth of bacteria or dust mites, or give off harmful emissions. Dust mites live mainly in beds and upholstery, which have the right conditions of temperature and humidity; carpets are too cold, too dry, and too exposed to light. Wool contributes to indoor air purity because it absorbs air pollutants and gases faster and better than nylon. Cumulative evidence strongly suggests that carpets have a beneficial effect on people’s health, provided they are maintained regularly and properly.

Did You See That Shot?

The score was tied with mere seconds on the clock. Fans of both Hamilton Southeastern and North Central were on their feet in anticipation. Gary Harris got the ball and made the calculated half-court shot that was heard around the world. Hamilton Southeastern won the championship and ESPN picked it as their moment of the week.

Through all of it, Jack Laurie Specialty Surfaces was there. Check out that video here.

In July, 2011, we sanded and refinished the Noblesville High School gym floor. After sanding it down to bare wood, we sealed the wood with Bona Kemi sealer. Following the sealer, we striped new game lines with new logos and graphics then applied two coats of Bona Kemi oil-modified finish. The project only took five weeks to complete.

Did our work help with the winning shot? We like to think so.

Area Rugs Have Come a Long Way

Area rugs can be a form of self-expression, a piece of art that really defines your individual tastes. They can add that burst of color, or simply keep the flow of the room going. Decorative and functional, they really soften and finish the look of a room.

At the grand opening of Jack Laurie Home Floor Designs at the Indiana Design Center in Carmel, Indiana, I discovered Surya. This brand covers the entire area rug spectrum. In addition to the traditional and timeless rugs you’ve come to know, they also offer various styles and colors that would satisfy any color nut.

Here are some of my favorites:

Aros rug: Made of 100% New Zealand felted wool, this rug brings out the fun in any room. A wide variety of shapes and colors are available.

Oasis rug: The word “geometric” can be interpreted in so many different ways. I like this line of rugs because Surya interprets nearly every definition with the various palette and shape combinations with this rug.

Sculpture rug: Really want to keep your rug subtle but interesting? This rug adds a punch of texture without being ostentatious. This rug is 100% wool and is designed by Candice Olson, host of HGTV’s Divine Design and HGTV Design Star.

We just so happen to be giving a Surya rug away during our Fabulous Facebook 500 Contest. Simply like the Jack Laurie Home Floor Designs Carmel Facebook page. When we hit 500, we give away a Surya rug.

Still searching for that perfect area rug? Jack Laurie Home Floor Designs offers custom area rugs. We can create a custom area rug with any carpet product in the store.

When you envision your perfect room, what area rug do you see in it?

Colors You Love, Colors You Are

What I’ve always loved about living in Indiana are the palettes the changing seasons bring; Soft pastels to vibrant tones, muted earthy colors and every hue of white you can imagine. The changing seasons always inspire us: How we dress, how we act, even how we style our home.

The seasons also inspire yearly trends in color.

“Colorists and designers find inspiration in many areas, including fashion, trade shows, trend-forecasting groups and global events,” says Nathan Hammett, manager of color and design at Mohawk Residential. According to Nathan, five words define current trends in color and design: Comfort, Celebration, Responsibility, Nostalgia and Intrigue.

Comfort epitomizes the back-to-basics neutral palettes of both the apparel and home furnishing industries. Celebration shades make a strong accent statement in each of our themes. This concept translates into both traditional and eclectic interiors as well as contemporary spaces. Responsibility is a segment of the environmental movement. Low-impact dyes and dying methods were created, allowing for a larger range of colors to be developed in organic fibers. Nostalgia represents our yearning for the less complicated. Intrigue is also reminiscent of an earlier era. Deep rich color is making a huge statement in both apparel and home furnishings.

As you can tell, I am obsessed with color. I follow blogs, take the online tests. I even have several Pantone books that I browse through. I have a few to share for your own inspiration.

ColourLovers.com – This is one of my favorite blogs. In addition to featuring the use of color in media, art and clothing this blog also shows the latest trends in color.

PPGPorterPaints.com – Jack Laurie Interiors Contracting is an exclusive Porter Paints partner. Not only are their colors endless, their website is too. You can find the 2011 paint trends here.

If you’re still searching for the right color for you, take their online quiz.

The most important thing, after looking through all of this, is to stay true to you. Color is personal. Our staff at Jack Laurie Home Floor Designs in Fort Wayne and Carmel, Indiana, can help you discover your own personal trends. In addition to meeting all your flooring needs, we also can handle all your interior work, such as painting, as well as keep your floors looking like new for years to come.
